A beginner guide that assumes nothing

Frickbear's 3 never explains its own office. This page covers only what you need to clear Night 1 and understand why you died, in the order the game introduces it.

The 60-second version

Short version

You are guarding an office with two doors, a vent, a flashlight, a mask and a camera monitor. Threats approach from the left, the right, the vent or the hallway, and each one has a fixed counter. The music box must be clicked occasionally. Everything you do drains power, and power running out is not a scare, it is a loss.

On Night 1 only Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy and the Marionette matter. Play Jeremy, keep the monitor down unless you need information, and close a door only when the audio tells you to.

What you actually control

The office looks like a first-person room, but it is really a small control panel with five independent inputs. Understanding that they are independent is the single biggest jump in skill this game offers.

  • Left and right doors. Each is a binary on/off. They do not need to be held, and they can be operated while the monitor is up.
  • The flashlight. A short, aimed beam. It is a tool for specific animatronics, not a way to see the room.
  • The Freddy mask. Your answer to the vent and to apparitions. It does not protect you from the doors.
  • The monitor. Camera intel and the music box. Looking at it costs you awareness of the office, not power.
  • The music box. A hard timer. Clicking it resets the timer; ignoring it ends the night.

A Night 1 you can survive

Treat 12 AM to 6 AM as six one-hour blocks. Nothing in the first hour can kill you if you simply leave the doors closed and the box wound, but you would arrive at 6 AM with no power. The following rhythm is deliberately boring, and that is the point.

  1. 12 AM to 1 AM: wind the box once, then leave everything open. Listen. You are calibrating your ears, not fighting.
  2. 1 AM to 2 AM: check the cove once. If Foxy has moved past the first curtain stage, close the left door for a few seconds and reopen it.
  3. 2 AM to 4 AM: this is where Bonnie and Chica alternate. Close on the hum, reopen on silence. Do not close both doors unless you hear both.
  4. 4 AM to 5 AM: wind the box again. Freddy becomes the main threat, so use the cameras rather than both doors.
  5. 5 AM to 6 AM: hold your discipline. Most first-night deaths are a panic double-close with five minutes left.

Power discipline

Power is the only resource you cannot earn back mid-night. The game gives you enough to be correct, never enough to be safe. Three habits carry almost every run:

  • Open a door the moment the threat leaves. The game tells you with audio.
  • Never hold the flashlight to see the room; use it only on the animatronic that requires it.
  • Cap camera checks. One sweep per hour is enough on Easy; two on Lunatic.

If you are losing at 5 AM with the meter in the red, the mistake happened at 2 AM, not at the end. Review the night rather than the last minute.

The audio cues that matter

This is the part of the game that does not translate to a screenshot. Every core threat announces itself before it acts. Learn these seven and Night 1 stops being a gamble.

Mask and flashlight rules

These two tools cause more accidental deaths than the animatronics do, because both are conditional. The mask only works on vent intruders and apparitions. The flashlight only helps against threats that explicitly demand light, and actively kills you against the endoskeleton.

A simple rule: the mask answers things inside the room, the flashlight answers things outside it. If you cannot decide which tool a situation calls for, the answer is usually to do nothing and listen for one more second.

The music box

The Marionette's box is the only mechanic in the game with an instant, unconditional fail state. It does not care about doors, mask or power. In this game a single click fully winds it, so the correct habit is one click every time you pull the monitor up, not a long hold.

Your first salvage

After Night 1 you choose animatronics from a wrecked location. This is the game's real difficulty dial. On Jeremy you take one, on Mike two, on Vanessa three, on Fritz four, and every single one becomes a nightly threat.

  • Take the threat you can already hear. A familiar cue is worth more tokens than an unfamiliar one with a bigger payout.
  • Do not stack two mechanics that use the same button. Two flashlight threats in one run is a self-inflicted difficulty spike.
  • Budget for the shop. Tokens are not score. If an ending needs a purchase, the tokens are already spoken for.

The full location breakdown lives in the salvage guide, and if a specific animatronic is already killing you, the character index is organised by audio cue and counter.

Night 1 deaths, ranked

  1. Closing both doors on a single hum, then never reopening them.
  2. Watching the monitor through Freddy's laugh instead of using it to find his side.
  3. Flashing the window while the endoskeleton is standing there.
  4. Forgetting the music box during a Foxy sprint.
  5. Mashing the mask against a door threat, which does nothing.

Where to go next

Once Night 1 is clean, the next decision is not a mechanic, it is a route. Pick the ending you want before Night 2, because two of the five become much more expensive to reach after that point.
